A Non-Metabolic Model of Acifluorfen Activity

چکیده
The para -nitro substituted diphenyl ether herbicides which cause rapid plant pigment photobleaching can be divided into two categories: 1. those that have a photosynthetic requirement for activity (e.g. oxyfluorfen) and 2. those that have no apparent metabolic requirement for activity (e.g. acifluorfen). A m odel is presented for the latter category, in which the diphenyl ether herbicide interacts with carotenoids and/or chlorophyllide in plastid membranes to form a com plex which photochemically generates singlet oxygen or lipid-peroxidizing radicals.

Protoporphyrin IX Content Correlates with Activity of Photobleaching Herbicides.
Several laboratories have demonstrated recently that photobleaching herbicides such as acifluorfen and oxadiazon cause accumulation of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX), a photodynamic pigment capable of herbicidal activity. We investigated, in acifluorfen-treated tissues, the in vivo stability of PPIX, the kinetics of accumulation, and the correlation between concentration of PPIX and herbicidal damage...

Levels of non-protein thiols (mostly glutathione, GSH), ascorbic acid (AA), and activities of the enzymes ascorbate peroxidase (AP), glutathione reductase (GR) and GSH S-transferase (GST) were determined in cell-free leaf extracts of acifluorfen-resistant and -sensitive tobacco plants. These parameters were examined also in detached leaves of the above plants exposed to acifluorfen stress. In l...
متن کاملEffects of Acifluorfen on Endogenous Antioxidants and Protective Enzymes in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) Cotyledons.
The herbicide acifluorfen (2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy-2-nitrobenzoate) causes strong photooxidative destruction of pigments and lipids in sensitive plant species. Antioxidants and oxygen radical scavengers slow the bleaching action of the herbicide. The effect of acifluorfen on glutathione and ascorbate levels in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cotyledon discs was investigated to assess ...
متن کاملSelective induction of glutathione S-transferase subunits in wheat plants exposed to the herbicide acifluorfen.
Exposure to the herbicide acifluorfen resulted in marked increase of glutathione S-transferase (GST) enzyme activity in wheat seedlings, primarily in shoot tissues. From the six major, constitutively expressed GST subunits found in untreated wheat shoots subunits 2 and 3 were selectively induced by acifluorfen. No new subunit could be detected. The induced subunits belong to those GST isoenzyme...
متن کاملKinetic studies on protoporphyrinogen oxidase inhibition by diphenyl ether herbicides.
Diphenyl ethers (DPEs) and related herbicides are powerful inhibitors of protoporphyrinogen oxidase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of haems and chlorophylls. The inhibition kinetics of protoporphyrinogen oxidase of various origins by four DPEs, (methyl)-5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid (acifluorfen and its methyl ester, acifluorfen-methyl), methyl-5-[2-chloro...
